Burrell Lock and Dam to be closed for inspection May 10-28
The Burrell Lock and Dam in Lake County will be closed beginning Monday, May 10, and continuing through May 28 while the St. Johns River Water Management District performs an inspection and maintenance.
Located just south of U.S. Highway 44 on Haynes Creek, the Burrell Lock and Dam were constructed in 1957 to assist in the passage of fishing boats and pleasure crafts. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the District are partners in the inspection of locks, dams and spillways operating in freshwater every three to seven years, and in the rehabilitation of structures every 10 to 15 years.
If any deficiencies are discovered in the inspection process, they will be corrected immediately. The lock was rehabilitated in 2002 with major structural and mechanical repairs and upgrades performed.
While the lock and dam are closed, boaters are encouraged to launch their boats either north or south of the lock to ensure they can navigate to their destinations.
