Geography Week Keys on Water
Gov. Charlie Crist has issued a proclamation declaring Nov. 14-20 as Geography Awareness Week. The National Geographic Society has chosen "Freshwater" as this year's theme. A website created by the Florida Geographic Alliance aims to heighten awareness of conservation efforts, community opportunities and water-related controversies in our home state of Florida.
Even though it is called the "blue planet," only 3 percent of the water on Earth is fresh and less than 1 percent of that amount is available for direct human use. As Americans, each one of us uses 80 to 100 gallons of water a day or the equivalent of a filled Olympic-sized pool a year. It is important that we conserve our water.
