Lake, cities to pitch in $15,000 for Dora Canal cleanup

TAVARES — Grantland Rice, the famed 1930s sportswriter, once called the Dora Canal "the most beautiful mile of water in the world."

Eight decades later, it's that sentiment behind an effort led by the Lake County Water Authority to remove tree debris from the historic waterway that links lakes Dora and Eustis. Known for showcasing Florida flora and fauna — including otters, herons and alligators — the canal is a popular destination for birdwatching and boat tours.
