Lake Apopka cleanup to keep wildlife, people more in mind

A vast landscape of remarkable beauty and terrible devastation known simply as "Lake Apopka North Shore" was put on track Tuesday for a new era in which wildlife and people will be given increasing consideration and priority.

For nearly a quarter-century, an enormous amount of energy has been focused on cleaning up soupy-green Lake Apopka in Orange and Lake counties by using bulldozers and levees to manage water pollution and pesticide contamination in an adjoining expanse of former farmland. That setting has not been particularly people-friendly.
