Lake County Parks & Trails hosts World Water Day hike

GROVELAND — In recognition of World Water Day, the Lake County Parks & Trails Division is hosting an informative World Water Day Hike from 9 - 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22 in the heart of the Green Swamp at Pasture Reserve, Lake Erie Road, Groveland.

The free hike will be led by park ranger Rachel Dellinger, Ph.D., through the Pasture Reserve, Lake County’s largest preserve at over 800 acres.

“World Water Day draws attention to the links between water and energy and also about the lack of safe drinking water in parts of the world,” said Dellinger. “We will be hiking at the Pasture Reserve which is in the Green Swamp area of Lake County—a significant recharge area for the Floridan Aquifer, the source of drinking water for most of Central Florida that experts worry is not filling back up quickly enough to meet demands of a growing population.”

World Water Day is observed annually on March 22 as a way to focus on the importance of fresh drinking water and advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. It has been observed since 1993.
