Burrell Lock and Dam closure extended

PALATKA – The temporary closure of the Burrell Lock and Dam in Lake County will be extended from Aug. 21 until Friday, Sept. 4. The St. Johns River Water Management District closed the structure on July 27 for routine maintenance. Persistent rain has delayed completion of the work.

Located just south of U.S. Highway 44 on Haynes Creek, the Burrell Lock and Dam were constructed in 1957 to assist in the passage of fishing boats and pleasure crafts. The purpose of the maintenance work is to repair the concrete surfaces of the gate walls and slab that have eroded over time.

While the lock and dam are closed, boaters are encouraged to launch their boats either north or south of the lock to ensure they can navigate to their destinations.

The public can obtain more information by contacting Robin Harrell, public works program manager for the District, at (352) 821-1053 or rharrell@sjrwmd.com.
