TAVARES — City officials are assuring commercial owners and residents the downtown area will remain open for business during a lengthy reconstruction project.

The $5.3-million Ruby Street stormwater improvement and beautification plan will replace an aging pipe system and also include an 8-acre walkable park and ruby red brick pavers laid in the street running along Lake Dora. Construction is expected to be completed by fall 2017, barring delays. The new look is intended to boost retail and entertainment business in downtown Tavares.

"This is exciting. This is huge for our community," said Ryan Veraghen, owner of Ruby Street Grille. "It's going to put us on the map even bigger and better than we are now."
