St. Johns River at Astor to reach moderate flood stage

A River Flood Warning remains in effect for the St. Johns River at Astor. Heavy rain from Hurricane Dorian will cause the St. Johns River to continue to rise this week. The river is forecast to reach Moderate Flood Stage at Astor late tonight or early Wednesday.

The extent it rises along the St. Johns River will be highly dependent on the path Hurricane Dorian. Residents along the river should be prepared for flooding and keep up with the latest forecasts.

At 3 feet, moderate flooding occurs, with water covering yards and further encroaching on many low lying homes near the river. The St. Johns River at Astor is expected to crest at 3.4 feet Wednesday night. It reached 4.4 feet following Hurricane Irma in 2017.

A no wake zone is being enforced on the St. Johns River until further notice. An idle-speed, no-wake zone means a vessel may not travel faster than required to maintain steerageway and headway.

Before flooding occurs, residents in the area are urged to immediately move to higher ground. Avoid walking or driving through flood waters. "Turn Around, Don't Drown!" Just six inches of moving water can knock people down and two feet of water can sweep vehicles away.
